The first sign of the apocalypse is when chimps overthrow humans and begin feeding on the flesh of their faces. The second? When malamutes and mastiffs start making small talk with their masters. The end times may be nigh, then, as Del Monte Foods has crowned its first-ever spokesdog to coincide with the 100th anniversary of its Milk-Bone brand. The winner is Winston, a Great Dane from Mosinee, Wis. The press release doesn't say whether Winston advises his master, the lovely Melissa Ruppert, verbally—to kill, for example, à la Son of Sam. But that seems like a requirement for any "spokes" role.
Winston gets a $100,000 contract for winning the Make a Milk-Bone Moment contest and will be featured on packaging and in marketing initiatives throughout 2009. He'll also serve as advocate for the Milk-Bone Canine Heroes outreach program, which provides canine-assistance dogs to people with disabilities and police dogs to law-enforcement organizations.
