IHOP not content to sit by and let KFC have all the unhealthy fun

Posted on Mon May 3 2010

KFC has been taking the heat lately for its fried slabs of chicken stuffed with bacon and cheese. So, did IHOP decide to take one for the nutritionally challenged team? Or maybe the chain, known for its Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity, thinks it's a good idea to serve a five-layer carb-and-sugar concoction as part of a 1,250-calorie breakfast. It might be the latter. Glendale, Calif.-based IHOP just rolled out "five-layer Pancake Stackers" that consist of a layer of "crust-less cheesecake" in between two pancakes topped with fruit and whipped cream. It comes with bacon, hash browns and two eggs. A full nutritional breakdown wasn't available, but the calorie count alone is mind-numbing. It's a limited-time item, available until June 20, and can be yours for about $4.99. Restaurant execs say they're just giving folks what they want. Sure, if they're looking for type 2 diabetes. Commercials are coming, and I can't wait to see them. Think they'll carry a list of side effects and disclaimers? Naw. But they should.

Donovan McNabb no match for perky IHOP waitress

Posted on Thu Sep 3 2009

Apparently, even an IHOP waitress can take down an NFL quarterback like Donovan McNabb when he invades her turf. That, at least, is the lesson learned in this new spot, which shows a feisty blonde brown-haired worker tackling the Philadelphia Eagles star for attempting to steal her customers. "That's my table, McNabb," she tells him after knocking him down. The spots, by VitroRobertson, San Diego, promote the chain's new, NFL-inspired menu items, which include an MVP, Veteran, Rookie or Draft Pick Quarterback Scramble and a football-shaped French toast. A separate spot, featuring Arizona Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald, is also running, and shows him catching a plate of the football toast, milk pitcher and cup all with one hand. This guy's got skill, man. (OK, suspension of disbelief required.)
