Fox will be heartbroken if you miss out on that 'Lie to Me' promo
Posted on Thu Mar 12 2009Don't even think about zipping through that on-air promotional spot for Fox's new drama Lie to Me. Actually, go ahead. You'll see it anyway, in practically the same form as someone watching it in real time.
Fox is following the lead of major advertisers who have crafted spots specifically to be seen when a viewer is trying to avoid them—when their hands are on the fast-forward buttons of their DVRs. Sneaky! The 10-second spot (seen at the 44-second mark of the video shown here) was shot in slow motion, meaning that a fan who speeds through it will still see the image of star Tim Roth and the bold-faced name of the show. That's enough to make an impression, or so the network hopes. Fox, like many other networks, also is cramming original content into the commercial breaks, trying to get viewers to watch the advertising. Fox might have a leg up on the competition here, since this "pod-busting" is happening during one of TV's most-watched shows, American Idol, and the snippets include the worst of the worst from the audition rounds. Who doesn't love a train wreck?
