Will the Los Angeles octuplets ever get their chance to sell out?
Posted on Tue Feb 3 2009Eight is enough to launch a media frenzy, but can it create marketing stars?
The Los Angeles octuplets, possibly the most famous babies in the world at the moment, haven't been released from the hospital yet, but they're already prepping for their next big entrance, with a corporate PR firm set to sift through requests from news outlets, donors and Hollywood. First photos, the life story of their 33-year-old mother, book, TV and movie deals, sponsorship opportunities—the sky's the limit.
Or is it?
Killeen Furtney Group, with a specialty in crisis PR, is positioning Nadya Suleman as Mom of the Century, but marketing veterans say she's not an easy sell. She's unmarried, living with her parents and, by her mom's admission, obsessed with having children. Her brood now numbers 14 in all: 10 boys and four girls, all conceived by in-vitro fertilization. Look at Kate Gosselin. She's considered the most evil, exploitative tramp in the known universe, and she only had six kids at once.
Blogger criticism of the high-risk multiple births and Suleman's circumstances has been brutal. In this economic climate, where marketers are watching every nickel and running from any whiff of controversy, we wonder if these little preemies will ever become big brand ambassadors.
